Medical Alert Devices vs. Smartwatches: What’s Safer for Seniors in an Emergency?

When it comes to safety and peace of mind, not all technology is created equal — especially for seniors. Smartwatches might offer convenience, but when emergencies happen, simplicity and reliability matter most.

Designed for Emergencies — Not Just Convenience

Medical alert systems are purpose-built for fast, easy emergency response. With a single button press, users are immediately connected to trained professionals — no swiping, unlocking, or navigating screens. This is especially important during high-stress situations when every second counts.

Ease of Use Matters

Many seniors find smartwatches complicated or uncomfortable. Medical alert buttons, on the other hand, are lightweight, waterproof, and designed for everyday wear. They can be worn around the neck or wrist and are simple enough for anyone to use, even with arthritis or limited dexterity.

Fall Detection That’s Built-In

Some of our mobile systems include optional automatic fall detection — a critical feature for those at risk of losing consciousness or who have difficulty pressing a button. Our at-home fall detection buttons also provide this added security and offer up to 2 years of battery life without requiring charging.

Important Note: While fall detection technology adds an extra layer of safety, it is not 100% accurate. No company can guarantee it will detect every fall. If possible, users should always press their button. We believe in being honest about what this technology can and cannot do — and we’re here to help you choose the best fit for your needs.

Smartwatches May Not Work in the Shower

Most accidents happen in the bathroom — a place where smartwatches are often removed due to water concerns. Our medical alert devices are waterproof and specifically designed to be worn in the shower, giving you coverage where it’s needed most.

Battery Life and Charging

  • Mobile devices without fall detection: Charge once per month
  • Mobile devices with fall detection: Charge every 3–5 days
  • At-home fall detection buttons: Up to 2 years of battery life (no charging needed!)

We have low battery detection built in and will replace the button free of charge before the battery dies.

The Bottom Line

Smartwatches are impressive — but when it comes to emergencies, seniors need devices that are simple, reliable, and made specifically for their needs. Our systems are designed with those priorities in mind, so families can have peace of mind knowing help is always close by.
